The Verb NEED: Grammar Rules

The verb need can be used as an ordinary verb and as a modal verb.

Need as an ordinary (main) verb behaves like other ordinary verbs.

• I need some help.
• She needs a new laptop.
• We need to leave now.
• He needed to speak to you.

Questions and negatives use do/does/did:

• Do you need any help?
• Does she need to go?
• I don’t need to hurry.
• He didn’t need to come.

Need as a modal verb is mainly used in negative sentences and questions.

• You needn’t worry. (= You don’t need to worry.)
• She needn’t come tomorrow.
• Need I say more?
• Need we wait?

Modal verb need does not take -s, -ed, or to.

Needn’t vs don’t need to

They usually have the same meaning:

• You needn’t come early.
• You don’t need to come early.

Both sentences mean: It is not necessary for you to come early. However, needn’t is more common in British English and can sound slightly more formal.

Past Meaning of the Verb Need: an Important Difference

didn’t need to do = it was not necessary. We don’t know whether the action happened or not.

• I didn’t need to buy any food because we had plenty at home. (Maybe I bought food; maybe I didn’t.)

needn’t have done = the action happened, but it was unnecessary.

• I needn’t have bought any food because we had plenty at home. (I bought food, but later discovered that it was unnecessary.)

Compare:

• I didn’t need to cook dinner. → Cooking wasn’t necessary. Perhaps I didn’t cook.
• I needn’t have cooked dinner. → I cooked dinner, but it wasn’t necessary.
• She needn’t have worried about the exam. → She worried, but there was no reason to.
• She didn’t need to worry about the exam and she didn’t because she had prepared thoroughly.
• We needn’t have taken a taxi. → We took a taxi, but it was unnecessary.

Exercise 6. Choose the correct form: needn’t have done or didn’t need to do. Pay careful attention to whether the action actually happened.

1. We ________ (reserve) a table because there were plenty of empty ones when we arrived. Luckily, we hadn’t made a reservation.
2. I ________ (print) all the documents because the meeting was cancelled, but I had already printed them.
3. She ________ (take) a coat with her because the weather forecast predicted warm temperatures, so she left it at home.
