The Scream by Edvard Munch, a Masterpiece of Expressionism
Hi there! I’m Vlad and today I’m sharing a painting description with you. The title of the painting is The Scream. It was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893. This artist lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and worked in the style known as Expressionism.
The Scream is considered both a symbolic painting and a genre painting because it expresses human emotions and psychological feelings. The painting is made with oil, tempera, and pastel on cardboard. It measures about 91 cm by 73.5 cm. One famous version of the painting is housed in the National Museum of Norway in Oslo, Norway.
The painting depicts a person standing on a bridge with hands pressed against the face. The figure looks frightened and anxious. In the background there are two people walking away, while in the far distance we can see water, hills, and the sky.
The space of the picture is asymmetrically divided. In the centre of the painting we can see the screaming figure, which immediately attracts the viewer’s attention. The lines of the bridge lead our eyes toward the background, creating a feeling of movement and tension.
At first glance, the painting looks strange and disturbing. But if you look closely, you can notice how the artist managed to capture fear and emotional suffering. It looks as if the whole world around the figure is shaking and moving.
Talking of technique, Munch used curving lines and distorted shapes to create emotion and anxiety. The brushstrokes are broad and flowing, which gives the painting energy and movement.
The picture is painted in warm and dark colours. The dominating colours are red, orange, blue, and black. The red and orange sky contrasts strongly with the dark water and bridge. These colours contrast very well and create a dramatic effect.
The shapes are not realistic because the artist wanted to express feelings instead of reality. The texture appears rough and emotional, which makes the atmosphere even more intense.
The main theme of the painting is fear, anxiety, loneliness, and emotional suffering. The screaming figure may symbolise modern human anxiety and stress. The bridge can represent the connection between reality and emotions, while the red sky may stand for danger, fear, or inner pain.
The painting expresses deep human emotions. It reminds us that everyone experiences fear and anxiety at some point in life. The painting makes me feel anxious and uneasy.
