Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Netherlands, in the family of Harmen and Neeltgen van Rijn. His father was a miller, and his family was well-to-do, which allowed Rembrandt to receive a good education. He began to study at the University of Leiden, but his passion for art was stronger, so he left his studies to learn painting. The young man showed exceptional talent, and by his early twenties, he had already impressed art lovers with his distinctive technique. Soon, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, where he began to receive important commissions, which was a great success for a young artist.

Rembrandt was married to Saskia van Uylenburgh, who was his great muse. They had four children, but unfortunately, only one son, Titus, survived to adulthood. Despite the huge success and wealth in his early career, Rembrandt often experienced financial difficulties later in life because he spent too much money on collecting art. His career was full of both successes and failures. He had difficult relationships with some rich customers who did not understand his changing style, and he was even forced to declare bankruptcy.

Rembrandt died on October 4, 1669, at the age of 63. His final years were full of sadness, as he outlived his beloved wife Saskia and his son Titus. Rembrandt was buried in an unmarked grave in Amsterdam because he died in poverty, which added a sad note to the end of his life. However, after his death, his artistic legacy left a significant mark on world culture. His masterpieces continue to inspire artists and art lovers around the world.

  • Rembrandt was the second youngest of ten children. Rembrandt’s family lived across from his father’s mill called De Rijn after the river the Rhine, hence the family name ‘Van Rijn’.
  • Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden, but he achieved his greatest fame in Amsterdam. Today, his house in Amsterdam is a museum you can visit.
  • He was a brilliant painter and at the age of 19 he opened his first art gallery. When he was only 21 he started to teach others how to paint.
  • He was a master of “chiaroscuro”, a technique that uses strong contrasts between light and dark to create a dramatic effect.
  • Rembrandt loved painting himself. He created 40 painted self-portraits (90 including drawings and etchings), which show how he changed and grew older over 40 years.
  • His most famous painting is called The Night Watch. It is huge (4.6 meters long and nearly 3.7 meters tall) and shows a group of city guards moving into the light. The Night Watch is currently displayed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

  • Rembrandt’s wife, Saskia, was the model for many of his beautiful paintings. After she died, his art became deeper and darker.
  • He was a passionate art collector. He bought ancient statues, exotic clothes, and weapon pieces, which often led him to money problems.
