Book Review: The Pale Horse
Hi there! I’m Liliya. I want to tell you about the book The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie.
The novel The Pale Horse belongs to the detective genre, with elements of thriller and mysticism. It features mysterious events, a crime investigation, and a tense atmosphere.
The main character is Mark Easterbrook, a writer who becomes accidentally involved in the investigation and gradually uncovers the truth behind the events. Ariadne Oliver, a famous detective novelist, also plays an important role by helping with the investigation. In addition, the story includes other characters connected to mysterious deaths and the strange organization known as The Pale Horse, who gradually help reveal the nature of the crime.
The novel begins with the mysterious death of a priest, Father Gorman, who, before dying, is linked to a list of names that later comes into Mark Easterbrook’s possession. This list includes people who, as it turns out, have died or will die under unusual circumstances. Mark is an ordinary man who unexpectedly finds himself involved in the case, but over time he begins to realize that all these events are connected.
At the same time, the story introduces a mysterious house called The Pale Horse, where three women who practice occult rituals and spiritualism live. They offer people “help”, supposedly the ability to influence fate, get rid of enemies, or solve problems through mystical means. In reality, these women are part of a criminal scheme that exploits people’s belief in the supernatural.
Mark gradually discovers that the people on the list were not chosen randomly. Their deaths are made to appear natural or accidental, but in fact, they are carefully planned murders carried out using poison. The criminals use a rare substance that leaves almost no trace, making the deaths seem mysterious or even “fated”.
During the investigation, Mark meets various people, including a police inspector and other individuals who help him unravel this complex case. At the same time, he finds himself in danger, as the criminals attempt to intimidate him and prevent him from discovering the truth.
In the end, it becomes clear that behind all these mystical events lies cold calculation and greed. The people behind The Pale Horse have created a system in which they manipulate fear, despair, and belief in the supernatural. They convince clients that their enemies will be punished, while secretly arranging deaths through poisoning.
The finale shows how Mark Easterbrook manages to expose the criminals and stop their activities. Everything falls into place, and the reader understands that there was no real magic, only a well-planned criminal scheme. The novel emphasizes the idea that fear of the unknown and belief in the supernatural can make people vulnerable to manipulation.
I recommend this book because of its engaging and intriguing plot. The author describes human nature in detail, which makes the book very captivating and easy to read in one sitting.
