Ways to Talk About Regret, Frustration, and Unreal Situations

English gives us several ways to talk about regret, frustration, and unreal situations. Two of the most powerful are I wish and If only. Many students find I wish and If only confusing at first. The verb tense often looks “wrong”, and it’s not always clear when to use would, past simple, or past perfect. The good news is that once you understand the idea behind these structures, they become much easier to use. In this post, you’ll learn how I wish/If only really work, what they mean, and how to use them naturally and accurately, especially in exams.

I wish and If only are used to express regret, dissatisfaction, or desire about situations that are not true or unlikely.
If only is stronger and more emotional than I wish.

Present situations (regret about now)

Meaning: The situation is not true now. Use Past Simple after wish / if only.

  • I wish I had more time.
  • If only she knew the truth.

Past situations (regret about the past)

Meaning: You cannot change the past. Use Past Perfect.

  • I wish I had studied harder.
  • If only we had left earlier.

Complaints / annoying habits

Use would + verb (only when someone/something keeps repeating the action).

  • I wish you would stop shouting.
  • If only it would stop raining.

Not used for things you can control yourself.

Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. I wish” vs “If only” – difference in tone.
I wish → neutral, reflective, polite
If only → stronger emotion (regret, frustration, longing)
    Compare:
I wish I had more time. → calm regret
If only I had more time! → stronger feeling, almost a sigh
  2. Time reference ≠ verb tense
With I wish/if only, verb tense does NOT show time, but distance from reality.
Present regret → past simple: I wish I lived closer to work. (= I don’t live closer)
Past regret → past perfect: I wish I had listened to her. (= I didn’t listen)
  3. Would = complaint or willingness (not facts)
Use would + verb only when:
    – The action is repeated or annoying
    – The subject is someone/something else
    – The speaker cannot control it✔️ I wish you would stop interrupting.
❌ I wish I would stop interrupting. (You control this → incorrect)
  4. Stative verbs and would
Stative verbs (be, know, have, like, believe) rarely work with would.❌ I wish I would know the answer.
    ✔️ I wish I knew the answer.
  5. Were vs was – formality & emphasis
I wish I was taller. → acceptable in informal speech
I wish I were taller. → preferred in formal / exam writing
  6. Regret vs desire
I wish I had gone. → regret about a specific past event
I wish I could go. → desire about a present or future situation
The modal could adds possibility, not just regret.
