Sorochynska (Sorochyntsi) Yarmarka, the Famous Ukrainian Fair

Hi! I’m Liliya. Today I want to introduce you to an important Ukrainian tradition. The Sorochyntsi Fair, also known as the Sorochynsky Fair, is a large and vibrant annual event held in the village of Velyki Sorochyntsi near Poltava, in the Myrhorod Raion of Ukraine.

This fair has a long and rich history. During the times of the Russian Empire, it was held five times a year, serving as a major trading center for people from all over the region. Later, during Soviet rule, the fair was suspended and went into a 40-year moratorium, but after Ukraine regained independence, it was revived and once again became a symbol of national culture.

The Sorochyntsi Fair is a grand showcase of traditional Ukrainian handicrafts created by skilled artisans. Among the most famous items are Reshetylivka embroidery, handmade rugs and tapestries, Opishnia ceramics, wooden crafts, jewelry, and many other unique works. Throughout the fair, visitors can also enjoy performances by theatrical groups who reenact scenes of village life, characters, and episodes from well-known Ukrainian stories and folklore.

The fair gained worldwide recognition thanks to Nikolai Gogol, who vividly described it in his story “Sorochyn Fair.” In his writing, he captured the joyful atmosphere, the lively crowds, the colorful variety of goods, and the typical fair characters who brought the event to life. Because of this, the fair is often associated with Gogol’s playful and magical descriptions.

A special pride of the fair is its traditional Ukrainian cuisine. Here you can taste rich borscht served in a real clay pot, soft dumplings with various fillings, and the famous Poltava galushky, known for their tenderness. Visitors can also enjoy homemade sausages, fresh and smoked meats, natural honey, uzvar made from dried fruits, fluffy pampushki, and many other authentic dishes. Food vendors often cook simply in the open air, filling the fair with warm, inviting aromas that make the experience even more unforgettable.

Today, the Sorochyntsi Fair is not just a market but a true celebration of Ukrainian culture, bringing together traditions, crafts, music, food, and hospitality. It remains a place where visitors can feel the spirit of Ukrainian heritage and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of one of the country’s most beloved folk festivals.
