The Tower of London, One of London’s Top Attractions 

Hi there! I’m Artiom and I’d like to share some interesting facts about the Tower of London. Sightseeing in London is a great way to learn about British history.

The Tower of London, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It has been a royal palace, a fortress, and a prison. Many famous prisoners were kept here, like Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes. Some were executed right inside the tower grounds. People say the Tower is haunted by ghosts of those who died there. Long ago, the Tower even had a royal zoo with lions, a polar bear and monkeys. It was a royal mint, coins of the realm were made here for over 500 years.

The Tower of London is located next to the River Thames and near Tower Bridge. The Tower of London is over 950 years old, it was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror to protect and control London.

Who Was William the Conqueror?

William the Conqueror (1028–1087) was the first Norman King of England. He was born in France, in a place called Normandy, and was originally known as Duke William of Normandy.

In 1066, he invaded England and won the famous Battle of Hastings. He defeated the English king Harold II, who was killed in the battle. After that, William became King of England, and people started calling him “William the Conqueror.”

He built the Tower of London to protect his new kingdom.

William changed England a lot, he gave land to his followers, built castles, and started a new way of ruling. He also created the Domesday Book, a big survey of everything people owned in England.

William ruled from 1066 until his death in 1087. His rule marked the start of Norman England and a new chapter in British history.

The Tower has lots of different buildings and towers inside its walls. You can see the Traitor’s Gate, where prisoners entered by boat. The central part is called the White Tower, made of strong stone.

Today, the Tower is home to the Crown Jewels, which are used in royal ceremonies. The Crown Jewels include sparkling crowns, swords, and golden items.
Guards known as Yeoman Warders (or Beefeaters) protect the Tower. They also give fun and scary tours, they’re full of cool facts.

Why Are Beefeaters Called Beefeaters?

The Beefeaters were created in 1485 by King Henry VII to protect the Tower and the royal family.

But why are they called Beefeaters? There are a few fun theories.

• One idea is that they were allowed to eat as much beef as they wanted when dining with the King.
• Another says they were paid in beef instead of money.
• Some believe they tasted the King’s food to make sure it wasn’t poisoned – especially important when Henry VIII feared enemies of his executed wives.
• One more theory says that families living inside the Tower ate rich meals with lots of meat, while poor people outside mostly ate vegetables and fish – so the name “Beefeaters” stuck.

Today, Beefeaters are famous guards who also give tours and take part in special ceremonies at the Tower of London. One of their key duties is the Ceremony of the Keys, which takes place every night at exactly 9:53 PM. This ancient tradition marks the official locking of the Tower.

It is said that if the legendary Ravens of the Tower of London leave, then the monarchy will fall and the Tower itself will crumble. Each Tower of London raven is cared for by the Ravenmaster who is a Beefeater. You can identify the Ravenmaster by the Raven emblem on the sleeve of his spectacular red and blue uniform. The ravens are generally free to roam around the Tower of London and visitors often get to see them very close to, which makes for a great photo opportunity.

The Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s protected as one of the most important historical buildings in the world.

To sum up, visiting the Tower is like time-traveling back to the Middle Ages. It’s one of London’s top attractions and a great place to learn about British history.
