Let’s have practice in writing an informal letter to recommend an app.

What’s an App?

An app (short for application) is a type of software you can download and use on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Apps help you do specific things: send messages, edit photos, learn a language, or play games.

Some popular apps are:

  • WhatsApp for sending messages and making calls
  • YouTube for watching videos
  • Google Maps for finding directions
  • Instagram for sharing photos and videos
  • Google Calendar is the best for scheduling
  • Canva is easy graphic design (great for social posts, resumes, etc.)
  • Duolingo is perfect for language learning

Where to find apps?

If you have an Android phone (like Samsung) use the Google Play Store. If you have an iPhone use the App Store.

Your friend has just bought a new smartphone and asked you to recommend an app. Write an email to your friend and recommend an app you use. Include the following information:

  • Say what you can do with the app and how often you use it.
  • Give reasons why you like it.
  • Describe any problems it has.

Hi Sophia!

I’m so happy that you have got a new phone! I want to recommend an app which I think you’d like, it is called CapCut. It’s a free video editing app that works great on your phone. I started using it recently, and it’s honestly cool for making fun, creative videos. I use it when I want to edit videos for school projects, social media, or just for fun. What I like most is how simple the app is to use, even if you’ve never edited videos before.  Whether you want to edit clips from a trip, add music to your videos, or create something for Instagram or TikTok, CapCut makes it super easy.

In CapCut, you can cut and trim videos; add music, text or stickers to your videos; use cool effects and filters; remove backgrounds or do slow motion. It’s really easy to use. If you want to edit video faster, you can find templates on TikTok and in just a few minutes you’ll have cool videos. It also has AI tools that help with editing, like turning text into videos or removing backgrounds without a green screen. And if you want to use it for something more professional, there’s even a desktop version with more features. There’s one small problem: some tools are only in Pro version, but the free version is great too and has everything you need for basic editing.
