Respond to News and Opinions

Let’s learn how to respond to news and opinions using so, too, neither, nor, either, really, oh.

We use expressions so/too and neither/nor/either in short statements meaning (me) too or (me) neither. We use these constructions in reaction to somebody’s statements to let the other person know that we are in the same situation.

We use so and too in positive statements. The form of an auxiliary or modal verb in short statements must be the same as the form of the main verb and the subject in the sentence to which it refers.

“So” and “Too” are used to agree with a positive statement.
So + auxiliary + subject
I like coffee. → So do I.

Subject + auxiliary + too
I like coffee. → I do too.

“Neither” and “Nor” are used to agree with a negative statement.
Neither + auxiliary + subject
I don’t like tea. → Neither do I.

Subject + auxiliary + either
I don’t like tea. → I don’t either.

Using “Really?” and “Oh”
“Really?” and  “Oh” are used when reacting to disagreement or stating a different opinion.
I love skydiving. → Really? I don’t.
I hate chocolate. → Oh, I do!

If someone says “I love pizza,” possible responses include:

Agreeing:

  • So do I.
  • Me too.
  • I do too. 

Disagreeing:

  • Really? I don’t.
  • Oh, I don’t. 

If someone says “I don’t like pizza,” possible responses include:

Agreeing with the negative statement:

  • Neither do I.
  • Nor do I.
  • Me neither.
  • I don’t either. 

Disagreeing:

  • Really? I do.
  • Oh, I do.
