Writing an Informal Letter: The Interests of Young People

Imagine you have got a letter from an English-speaking friend who asks you what young people in your country usually do in their spare time. Write a reply to him/her and say:

  • what young people in Ukraine are usually interested in;
  • if their interests are different from the hobbies of the young people of the 20th century
  • if boys and girls have the same interests;
  • what clubs young people attend, what books they read, what music they listen to, what films they watch;
  • if young people care about the environment/politics/social problems.

Hi there! I’m Dasha and this is my letter about the interests of young people in my country.

Hello Scarlett,

I hope you are doing well. I know that you have an interest in Ukraine, so I decided to write a letter about the interests of young people in my country and how they spend their leisure time.

Firstly, the interests of young people vary depending on their individual hobbies and interests. We, like young people all around the world, rely heavily on modern technology, which has become an integral part of our lives. We use it at school, at home, and in our everyday lives.

Secondly, while there are activities that tend to be associated more with boys or girls, we all share common interests. Young people here love playing musical instruments and often join various music clubs. In the evenings, it is common to find groups of friends gathered together with someone playing the guitar, and they enjoy singing popular songs. Although everyone has their own preferences when it comes to music, there are also many songs that are universally loved.

Like teenagers everywhere, we also enjoy watching movies. When new films are released, we go to the cinema, buy popcorn and enjoy ourselves. Additionally, girls often enjoy getting together and watching movies online. Not all teenagers are avid readers, but everyone has their own passions and can share interesting information about their interests. In our literature classes, we read and discuss a lot of poems and stories mainly to achieve good grades.

Thirdly, young people here are engaged in discussions about social, political, and environmental issues. Many of us have concerns about the situation in our country. Some university students actively participate in various rallies and events to express their opinions and make a difference.

In conclusion, it is important to note that young people in different countries share similar hobbies and interests, which bring us together. I would love to spend time with teenagers from other countries and receive a letter from you about the interests of young people in the USA.

Best wishes,

Dasha
