The world of painting is the expression of ideas and emotions with the help of shapes, lines, colours, tones, and textures which are used in various ways to produce volume, space, movement, and light on a flat surface. These elements are combined into expressive patterns in order to represent real or supernatural phenomena, to interpret a narrative theme, or to create abstract visual relationships.

artist / painter – художник/живописець
This is clearly the work of a superior artist. The artist brought his paints with him. Each poster is signed by the artist. He is a known artist. He is a painter in water colours. His originality as a painter lies in his representation of light.

icon-painting – іконопис
Icon-painting began to develop in Kyivan Rus in the end of the 10th century after Prince Volodymyr had baptised the state. Icon painting, also called isography, is a kind of Christian church painting intended to create sacred images.

depict – зображати
Icon painters, mostly monks, depicted Christ, Virgin Mary, angels and saints. Her paintings depict the lives of ordinary people in the last century. He was the first artist to depict the Highland landscape without sentimentality.

devote – присвятити
She gladly gave up her part-time job to devote herself entirely to her art. She gave up work to devote more time to her children. Those who devote their lives to others have that inspiration.

mosaic – мозаїка

Mosaic and frescos of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv are the most distinguished among the memorials of the early art period in Ukraine. Large fresco paintings cover the walls of this old church. The ceiling is richly decorated in marble and fresco. The interior walls are entirely fresco covered.

masterpiece – шедевр
This painting is regarded as a masterpiece. The painting is a masterpiece in the truest sense of the word. Many people regard this painting as Raphael’s masterpiece. ‘The Last Supper’ is widely regarded as Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.

Renaissance – Відродження, Ренесанс
Renaissance, a French term which has come to describe the ‘rebirth’ of interest in classical art and learning, above all from Italy, from the early 14th to the mid 16th centuries. Portrait painting as a separate genre appeared during the Renaissance in the 16th century and was greatly influenced by the icon tradition.

portrait – портрет
He painted a portrait of his daughter. The portrait was completed after six sittings. We hung her portrait above the fireplace. This portrait is the work of an acknowledged master. Line and colour are both important in portrait painting. He was putting the finishing stroke to the portrait.

Taras Shevchenko dedicated most of his painting to Ukrainian interests. He felt that medicine was the most important cause to which he could dedicate himself. He dedicated his poetry to the glory of God.

landscape – пейзаж
She prefers still life to landscape painting. The boy painted a landscape on paper. The travellers admired by the beauty of the landscape. J.M.W. Turner is one of the best-known British landscape painters.

Gustav Klimt was an outstanding painter of the 20th century. America has assimilated many outstanding people from all corners of the world. His paintings have outstanding style of Matisse.

He had a distinguished career as a diplomat. He was a distinguished artist. Van Dyck is a distinguished painter of the 17th century.

brilliant – блискучий
