Vincent van Gogh is a prominent artist of the 19th century. He depicted flowers and images of Paris in his early works. Later on he started to paint landscapes and portraits full of bright colours.
The piece above is one of many copies of his paintings. It is called “Sunflowers”. This artwork is one of Van Gogh’s most famous masterpieces created during 1888 – 1889. In fact, the artist created five large still life paintings with sunflowers. He portrayed three yellow flowers in a pot. He used three different shades of yellow and nothing else. With this, he showed that it was possible to create a couple of versions of the same painting. Of the five original versions of painting two are missing. One was destroyed in the war and the other one is in some private collection. This painting had a great influence on modern art and it continues to speak to people today.

Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in a small village in the Netherlands.
Before this famous painter started creating his works of art he wanted to be a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church just like his father.
He also had a number of other jobs before he started painting full time. He was a teacher in London, worked in a book store and worked in an art gallery. When he was in London, he was inspired by all the art he saw in galleries. Van Gogh’s brother, Theo, worked in an art gallery and introduced Van Gogh to many artworks. Van Gogh was interested in painters who were painting everyday life.
Van Gogh was 27 years old when he painted his first piece. When he first began painting, he used peasants as models and also used very dark colors like black, grey and dark greens.
He would later paint flowers, landscapes and himself, mostly because he was too poor to pay any models.
He was also very good friends with another famous artist, Paul Gauguin.
He painted over 900 paintings in the space of just 10 years.
Van Gogh struggled with mental health problems. This meant that he sometimes felt very angry or sad and was not able to control his emotions. Sometimes, he would harm himself and have blackouts. Van Gogh used painting as a way to express his emotions and way to help with his illness.He died by suicide. He was only 37.
