Funny Facts about Ostriches
My name is Anastasia. I love birds very much, from the smallest, such as hummingbirds, to the largest such as ostriches.
The ostrich is the largest bird in the world. I will tell you some interesting ostrich facts!
Ostriches can grow up to 2.7 m tall! They live up to 30-40 years in the wild. Their weight is more than 150 kg.
These birds cannot fly but they can run very fast, up to 70 kilometres per hour. Ostriches have long legs and their steps are up to 275 centimetres long. An ostrich is the only bird with two toes on each foot.
An ostrich has a long bare neck, long strong legs and a big body covered with feathers. The ostrich’s wings reach a span of about two metres. This bird has a small head, a short wide beak and large brown eyes protected by long dark eyelashes. Isn’t it funny that their eye is bigger than their brain! These amazing birds have excellent eyesight and can see their predators from afar.
Ostriches are mostly vegetarians. They eat roots, leaves, flowers and seeds, but they also eat insects and lizards. You may be surprised but they do not drink water. They get it from the plants they eat. They enjoy water and like to sit in it.
Ostriches live in groups called herds, a total herd of about 12 birds.
These birds have the largest eggs in the world. They weigh as much as two dozen chicken eggs (up to 1.5 kg!) In about 40 days, the new chicks hatch, all feathered and ready to walk!
Now ostriches live in parks or on farms and zoos. They are farmed around the world for their beautiful feathers, meat and skin, which is used for leather products.
Hi Nastia! I know that ostriches do not have teeth. I saw the ostriches in the Kyiv Zoo. It’s really a very interesting bird! I read that an ostrich can deal a fatal blow with its leg to even a lion. Maybe from an ostrich’s egg will be a very large omelette!!!
