“There is no friend as loyal as a book.”
Ernest Hemingway
Someone can say that books in the 21st century are not necessary, we don’t need them at all and they are the thing of the past. I must say that I totally disagree with this statement. In the past books were very expensive and only rich people could afford them. But now we can freely read books in the Internet, buy them or borrow in the library. Contemporary life is impossible without books and reading.
First of all, reading books keeps our intellect alive like chrging the bttery of our smartphone or laptop. We think about the things we read and we form our own opinions about certain things. Reading helps to expand our vocabulary.
Secondly, reading books is a good way to spend your free time following the author’s imagination or reading about historic facts.
Thirdly, regular reading enriches your knowledge of the world and helps to form your personality. When the life of a literary character is similar to yours, you take described events close to heart. We analyze the actions of the heroes and take out a lesson for ourselves, that can help us to avoid bad situations in our life. Books teach us critical thinking.
Last but not least, thanks to books we can talk to people who lived in different countries and ages. It gives us a unique chance to link up with authors who lived hundreds and thousands years ago.
On the other hand, many people believe that it is much easier to get information from the Internet and television. You don’t need to think a lot and create your own images, you use what you are fed with. I understand that not everybody can afford buying books, but thanks to the internet you can find each book online and read it for free.
Taking everything into account, I I am sure that reading books is not a waste of time although many people try to avoid every kind of reading. It is my belief that they do not know how exciting and wonderful reading books can be. I can’t say that I’m a bookworm but if I have some free time I read books. As usual they are comedies like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” but sometimes I can read something psychological like “A Street Cat Named Bob” or “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”. Books won’t disappear in the future.
