Learn “Silent Night” to sing at Christmas.
Silent night, Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia.
Christ, the Savior is born!
Silent night, Holy night!
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from the Holy face
With the dawn of heavenly grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth!
From the History of the Song
The origin of the Christmas carol we know as Silent Night was a poem that was written in 1816 by an Austrian priest called Joseph Mohr.
On Christmas Eve in 1818 in the small alpine village called Oberndorf it is reputed that the organ at St. Nicholas Church had broken. Joseph Mohr gave the poem of Silent Night (Stille Nacht) to his friend Franz Xavier Gruber and the melody and music for Silent Night was composed with this in mind.
The Silent Night music was therefore intended for a guitar and the simple score was finished in time for Midnight Mass.
Silent Night is the most famous Christmas carol of all times and its beautiful lyrics convey the essence of peace and love. It was declared an intangible cultural heitage by UNESCO in 2011.
