About Our World
- We live on the planet Earth. It is one of the nine planets around the Sun. They are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto. Nine planets and the Sun make up the Solar System. The Solar System is in a galaxy – the Milky Way. A galaxy is any of the large systems of stars. The galaxy is in space. Space is what is between Earth and other planets and stars. The Sun is a star. It is not a big star. The temperature on the Sun is about 6,000° (degrees) above zero. People live only on Earth. Our Earth is about 4,600 million years old.
- There is water and land on Earth. There is a lot of water on Earth. It is in oceans, seas, lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. The water in oceans and seas is salty. The water in rivers, lakes and streams is fresh. There are four big oceans: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. The largest of the oceans is the Pacific Ocean. The Mediterranean Sea is the largest of the seas. The Nile is the longest river in the world. It’s 6,670 kilometers The land on Earth is in six main patches. We call them continents. They are: Europe and Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia, Antarctica. Ukraine is in Europe. A small patch of land in the ocean or in the sea is an island. Great Britain is an island.
- There are a lot of forests and fields, hills and mountains on Earth. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is 8,843 metres high. Many different animals live on Earth. Different plants grown on it. Our Earth is beautiful. It is full of wonders.
- People of many different nationalities live on Earth. There are many countries on Earth. A country is a land, which has its own people, money, laws, flag, and anthem. There are large countries and small ones. There are warm countries and cold ones. Many countries are on different continents. Australia is a continent and a country. Nobody lives in Antarctica except for the scientists. We call people living in a country its citizens. You are a citizen of Ukraine. If you travel from one country to another you need a passport.
